School of Hospitality and Tourism
The process of formation and development of the School of Hospitality and Tourism – Hue University is marked through the following timelines:
* Period 1996 – 2007: Department of Tourism
(under the Faculty of Business Administration, University of Economics, Hue University)
Tourism training at the university level has been carried out at Hue University since 1996 by the Faculty of Economics – Hue University (now the University of Economics, Hue University) with an annual enrollment of more than 100 students and was considered one of the first university-level tourism training units in Vietnam. Right from the first courses, Hue University has paid great attention to developing this training industry based on taking advantage of funding from a number of international cooperation projects to build training programs, fostering staff, exchange of experts (such as the training project of regional management capacity development– Direg, Canada; AUF Francophone project; Cooperation project with the University of Hawaii – USA). As a result, tourism training activities at Hue University have achieved encouraging results as an essential foundation for the development in the later periods.
* Period 2008 – 2020: Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism – Hue University
Derived from the urgent need for high-quality tourism human resources to develop tourism in Thua Thien Hue, the Central – Central Highlands region and the whole country, as well as the requirement to reorganize relevant training majors regarding tourism at Hue University, on January 14, 2008, the President of Hue University signed Decision No. 020/QD-ĐHH-TCNS to establish the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism under Hue University.
Formerly the Department of Tourism of the Faculty of Business Administration – University of Economics, Hue University, the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism at the time of its establishment had 15 teaching staff and employees. After 13 years of establishment and development, the Faculty has grown continuously in quantity, gradually improved in structure, and developed in quality. From one undergraduate training program in 2008, by 2020, the Faculty has 11 undergraduate programmes, 02 master programmes and 01 doctoral program. The students increased rapidly from 120 undergraduate students in the first year of establishment (2008-2009) to 3480 students, master’s students, and doctoral students in the academic year 2019-2020.
* Period 11/2020 – now: School of Hospitality and Tourism – Hue University
On November 16, 2020, the Hue University Council issued Decision No. 73/QD-HĐH approving the project to establish the School of Hospitality and Tourism under Hue University.
The establishment of the School of Hospitality and Tourism – Hue University will promptly meet the urgent need for high-quality human resources to turn tourism into a spearhead economic sector of the country (according to Resolution No. /TW dated 16/01/2017 of the Politburo). At the same time, meeting the requirements of regional and international integration in tourism, contributing to improving the competitiveness of the industry and being proactive in regional and international integration, especially after the Association of Nations Southeast Asia (ASEAN) officially announced the ASEAN Mutual Recognition Arrangement on Tourism Professionals (MRA-TP) in August 2016.
The School of Hospitality and Tourism – Hue University was established in response to the policy of building Hue University into a National University in the period of 2020 – 2022, which is a high-quality multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary education center in Vietnam and in Asia. Striving to 2025, the School of Hospitality and Tourism will develop into a member university of Hue University.
